OpenAI has once again set the benchmark in artificial intelligence with the release of its latest models, O1-Preview and O1-Mini. These models have a phenomenal breakthrough in AI featuring more boosted through reasoning, reduced time consumption, and wider scalability compared to earlier models.
In this article, we’ll examine what differentiates the o1 series from other models, why these models have been developed, and how they differ from GPT-4.
What is the Open AI ChatGPT-o1 Series?
OpenAI released their latest reasonsing models named “o1-preview” and “o1-mini” right after few months of OpenAI GPT-4o. It is officially Released in September 2024 and OpenAI claims that these models are designed to offer more refined reasoning with better understanding of context and enhanced performance in tasks that require complex decision-making.
GPT-o1 models are built to serve both high-demand environments and more resource-constrained applications by making them versatile across various use cases.
OpenAI have come up with a new safety training approach that leverages their reasoning skills to make them comply with safety and alignment guidelines. One way we measure safety by testing how well our model still adheres to the safety rules if user tries to circumvent them (also known as “jailbreaking”).
On one of our most difficult tests of jailbreaking, GPT-4o received a score of 22 (on a scale of 0-100) while our o1-preview model received a score of 84. You can read this in the system card and our research post.
Why Was the o1-Model Created?
Reason of releasing back to back language models is to overcome the drawbacks of previous models such as GPT-4, which are not so good at reasoning tasks. By paying so much attention on ChatGPT’s o1-preview and mini model, now users can experience improved problem-solving abilities also these models can produce more accurate and nuanced answers which makes them most suitable for high-stakes applications in science, mathematics, and coding.
Key Differences Between o1-preview and o1-mini

Is ChatGPT o1-Preview Publicly Available To Be tried?
The O1-Preview models were officially launched on September 12, specifically for subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Teams. OpenAI further reported that starting from the following week, Enterprise and Educational users will also use these models hence more professionals and academics will obtain the benefits of the o1 series powerful new features.
Algorithms GPT-o1 Uses To Achieve Superior Reasoning?
OpenAI o1-preview and o1-mini have an architecture that uses two major algorithms including hierarchical reinforcement learning and enhanced attention mechanisms that are responsible to generate superior reasoning from user’s input.
At first, model processes input information better and then breaks it down into the necessary sub-tasks, which results in reasoning that is more truthful, and logical decisions.
As of late, this new model has been the brightest star at the Codeforces programming competitions, landing in the top 11% of participants. OpenAI is thrilled about the next version, which is envisioned to be able to solve complex benchmark problems in physics, chemistry, and biology with the same level of proficiency as a PhD student.
How You Can access ChatGPT o1-Preview or o1-mini?
The newly released O1-Preview is currently exclusive for subscribers. To access it, you’ll need to sign up for a $20/month Plus subscription. Once your subscription gets activated, make sure to choose either o1-preview or o1-mini from the toggle under a model picker on the left side of the ChatGPT homepage.
Be informed that access is limited even for the paying users with the weekly rate of 30 messages max for o1-preview and 50 messages max for o1-mini. OpenAI claims that they are looking to make o1-mini available for free tier users in the future although the company has not yet given the date for that.
