Apple has consistently followed a pattern with its iOS releases, and while the exact date for the iOS 18 developer beta is (24th of June, 2024). Public beta versions are expected to follow in July 2024, with the official public release anticipated in the fall of 2024.

Before, to get the developer beta you have to join the $99-per-year Apple Developer program. However, from iOS 17 onwards, Apple opened the developer beta to anyone with a free Apple Developer account. This rule stands for iOS 18 as well, so you can install the developer beta as long as your account is free.

Historical Context

New iOS versions are usually unveiled by Apple at the June Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Check out the release schedule for the most recent iOS versions:

Similar to the iOS 18 developer beta, you should only install the public beta on a secondary device. Even though it’s the public beta release but still it remains beta software which means that you may encounter bugs, app compatibility issues and reduced battery life. Keep in mind, Apple typically does not provide service or support for devices running beta software so proceed with caution when deciding to install it on your primary device.

Official Release Date

The final version of iOS 18 for public release will be made available in autumn, usually between mid-September and late September. Past patterns have seen Apple introduce a new version of iOS immediately after unveiling its latest iPhone model. With the iPhone 16 expected to be announced in early September (most likely around the 9th and 17th), we can expect iOS 18 to be released on September 16-23, just days before it hits retail stores.

iPhone models as old as the iPhone XS will receive support from iOS 18. Nevertheless, features like Apple Intelligence are restricted to devices with specific hardware requirements – the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Typically Apple releases iOS updates for 5 Years to their iPhone devices and discontinue their update support to their older models.But this time iOS 18 has changed this trend as all iPhone devices that are running on iOS 17 will also compatible with iOS 18 including one of oldest flagship iPhone XS.
